Most Australian pears are grown in Victoria's Goulburn Valley around Shepparton, with smaller volumes from the Yarra Valley, Orange, the Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and WA. Packham's Triumph, Williams (Bartlett) and Beurré Bosc are the main varieties, and long-term cold storage carries Packham's through much of the year.
Pears ripen after harvest, so firmness at packing and ripening programs for retail decide how each lot is sold.
