Rising costs combined with changes to compliance requirements for recording and reporting piece work are some of the drivers for progressive growers' current focus on technology and systems.

There are several products in the market that may assist with monitoring tasks, tracking inputs, and reporting on critical outputs such as yields, quality, and labour productivity.

Many service providers claim improvements in the management of information, reduced administration burden, improved traceability of crop inputs and streamlining of labour management.   Packhouse management software traceability comprehensive pack-house management for fruit, vegetable, and fresh produce processors, packers, importers and exporters

Apple packhouses do more than pack apples – they sanitise, sort and discard. And since apples are for eating, managing potential pathogens and ensuring overall food safety are very important.

PhD candidate Elizabeth Frankish is in the throes of surveying apple packhouses in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia,
collecting data from the full range of packhouse systems nationwide.

Elizabeth is researching the pathogen predictors of apple packhouses. She's figuring out if the incidence of pathogen contamination is related to fruit maturity or quality, or hygiene conditions.

Australian apple packhouses have been keen to get involved in the study and support Elizabeth's development of a risk assessment software model especially for Australian apple packhouses.

Advances made in the past three decades in online grading are reviewed in context of fruit quality attributes. Commercial sorting capability has expanded from weight to external colour and shape sorting and then to external defect recognition, while internal defect detection has been enabled through use of UV and particularly NIR wavelengths. Disparities between commercial application and the scientific literature base are highlighted. The potential for packhouse use of other non-invasive sensor technologies is summarised, primarily in context of at-line biosecurity applications. The translation of technologies from packhouse to orchard is described in context of instrumentation for assessment of optimum harvest timing through assessment of fruit maturity, e.g., using hand-held spectroscopy, and harvest load, i.e., fruit size and number. These technologies also provide a foundation for development of other capabilities in the orchard, including automated harvesting. These topics will be illustrated with application examples from the Australian mango industry.
