Vertical farming solutions for sustainable food production in an sustainable environmentally friendly manner.
By 2050, the world’s population is expected to grow by another 2 billion people, and feeding it will be a huge challenge. Due to industrial development and urbanization, we are losing arable lands every day. Scientists say that the Earth has lost a third of its arable lands over the last 40 years.

We don’t know how much more we are going to lose in the next 40 years. Increasing food demand due to a growing population along with ever decreasing arable lands poses one of the greatest challenges facing us. Many believe that vertical farming can be the answer to this challenge. Is vertical farming the future of agriculture? Let’s find out!

What Is Vertical Farming?
Vertical farming is the practice of producing food on vertically inclined surfaces. Instead of farming vegetables and other foods on a single level, such as in a field or a greenhouse, this method produces foods in vertically stacked layers commonly integrated into other structures like a skyscraper, shipping container or repurposed warehouse.
Using Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) technology, this modern idea uses indoor farming techniques. The artificial control of temperature, light, humidity, and gases makes producing foods and medicine indoor possible. In many ways, vertical farming is similar to greenhouses where metal reflectors and artificial lighting augment natural sunlight. The primary goal of vertical farming is maximizing crops output in a limited space.

How Vertical Farming Works
There are four critical areas in understanding how vertical farming works:

1. Physical layout,

2. Lighting,

3. Growing medium,

4. Sustainability features.

Firstly, the primary goal of vertical farming is producing more foods per square meter. To accomplish this goal, crops are cultivated in stacked layers in a tower life structure. Secondly, a perfect combination of natural and artificial lights is used to maintain the perfect light level in the room. Technologies such as rotating beds are used to improve lighting efficiency.

Thirdly, instead of soil, aeroponic, aquaponic or hydroponic growing mediums are used. Peat moss or coconut husks and similar non-soil mediums are very common in vertical farming. Finally, the vertical farming method uses various sustainability features to offset the energy cost of farming. In fact, vertical farming uses 95 percent less water.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Vertical Farming
Vertical farming has a lot of promise and sounds like the farm of the future. However, there are a few stumbling blocks to consider before rushing full-speed ahead into vertical farming.

Advantages
It offers a plan to handle future food demands
It allows crops to grow year-round
It uses significantly less water
Weather doesn't affect the crops
More organic crops can be grown
There is less exposure to chemicals and disease
Disadvantages
It could be very costly to build and economic feasibility studies haven't yet been completed
Pollination would be very difficult and costly
It would involve higher labor costs
It relies too much on technology and one day of power loss would be devastating
VERTICAL FARMING TRACEABILITY HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER
Instant traceability recalls, with 100% accuracy. Trace fruit & vegetables back to a grower, area of land/field, crop batch/patch and all inputs and their related suppliers & batch/lot details. If you use farmsoft Post Harvest software for tobacco processing, you can even trace product all the way to customers and invoices.

Agriculture Traceability – What Is It All About?
In recent times, the accurate and timely traceability of products and activities throughout the supply chain has become a key factor in food and agribusiness. More and more people around the world are demanding proof that food products are safe and of high quality. This often includes traceability, or the ability to track where a product came from. Food safety and agriculture traceability are currently at the forefront of both regulatory and industry discussions around the world.

Agriculture Traceability – What Does It Really Mean?
Traceability is a tool for meeting consumer demands and assuring them that a grower is indeed meeting their requirements. The traceability information or product tracking tool should be able to identify at any specified stage of the food supply chain (from production to distribution) from where the food came and to where the food went, as appropriate to the objectives of the food inspection and certification system. Additionally, production traceability reduces business risks and losses due to possible product recalls, especially in the food industry.

Food manufacturers can prevent some food safety problems by understanding all food production practices.

Consumers are becoming more concerned about food safety, and certain segments of the population are becoming more concerned, for instance, about how food is produced, and whether it is organic, or minimal chemical use.

Avoiding Product Recalls Before They Happen
Product recalls in the food industry usually occur when a product fails on quality testing. This can happen for various reasons including sanitation issues, unallowed agricultural practices by providers that fail to be reported on time, risk of foodborne illness, or some mistake that occurs during the final production process. In any event, once the inspection services conduct a check and the item fails inspection it’s safe to say that the damage has already been made. To avoid this from happening again, we need to trace the product back to the source, from the moment it was received for processing to the moment it failed inspection.

The Role of Traceability in The Food Supply Chain
Food supply chain traceability requirements play a significant role in helping businesses stay competitive in the domestic and global marketplace while being conscious of public health. From distribution and transport to retail – all the way to the end consumer, the ability to trace a product through all stages of production plays an important role for any business dealing with produce. Food Traceability Systems, essentially cover all aspects of production from farm to fork. Food traceability is as complex as keeping to global traceability standards, which is why good traceability solutions are important in the food industry.

Consumers expect to know what happens to food products every step of the way.

Benefits of Traceability For Farmers
The benefits of traceability are widely recognized. Yet for small-scale farmers in developing countries, especially farmers producing horticultural and other fresh produce, traceability and transparency requirements can represent barriers to trade. The market for safe and traceable food can exclude small-scale agricultural producers who lack the resources to comply with increasingly strict standards, particularly requirements for tracking and monitoring environmental and supply chain variables through sophisticated technologies.

Traceability is a valuable business practice for farmers. Adopting product traceability is not a choice. It’s a question of how we do this in the best way possible, and how we take advantage of the opportunities that are emerging.

How Does Farmsoft Help Keep Farm Production Traceable and Transparent
Farmsoft promotes best production practices for over 100 crops, with detailed record-keeping of working hours, pest protection, pesticide use, fertilization, and geographical locations of fields on which a particular crop is being grown. The Reporting feature will ensure that the product is linked to data in real-time illustrating how it was treated throughout the growing season and in which location effectively solving any quality control issues and risk management. This will ensure a competitive edge and easier access to buyers of harvested produce.

Traceability in Agriculture
Traceability in agriculture is a common term in the farm industry these days. It’s definition is broad but generally refers to the ways produce is tracked through all steps of production. Consumers are increasingly demanding more information on production practices.

Our small American farms are disappearing because they are unable to compete with larger domestic or international farming operations. To make matters worse, a growing number of retail chains require that their suppliers employ sophisticated traceability technology, but small farmers do not have the resources to provide traceability due to the high price and time commitment incurred to implement existing traceability systems. As a result, small, local growers will be increasingly shut out of retail chains. The Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) is an industry-wide effort, intended to move the supply chain to a common standard for electronic produce traceability by the end of 2012. The plan involves adopting a standardized system of case bar coding for all produce sold in the United States, to allow product to be tracked throughout the distribution chain. If it is successful, the plan will maximize the effectiveness of the industry's current traceability procedures, improve internal efficiencies and assist public officials when they need to quickly trace back a product to narrow the impact of future recalls. However, a significant challenge to the plan's success has been smaller growers' reluctance to adopt the GS1 technology required for participation, because the technology can be expensive for a very small operation to acquire and implement. A GS1 manufacturer's number is required before a small grower can label any of their cases of produce for traceability under the system required for compliance with the PTI. The cost of a manufacturer's number can range from $750 into the thousands for the first year, with subsequent annual renewal fees that varies depending on a company's annual sales. For the struggling small to medium sized grower, even $750 is too steep a price to absorb. Through consumer education and demand-focused marketing, Top 10 will ultimately increase competition in the domestic market for premium produce, and will increase awareness of locally grown produce in the American market. The GS1 traceability system will encourage fair pricing and increased access to high quality, safe domestic produce and this should increase domestic demand. As the consumer becomes informed about fresh produce, and are educated through demand-side marketing, the public will make a shift toward a healthier diet. Increased consumer awareness and education may increase consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables. Sustainable and organic growing methods will become popular with the consuming public and sustainable practices will be more profitable due to increased consumer awareness and the resulting demand for sustainable produce from smaller farms. This will act as a catalyst in the farming community, encouraging farmers to achieve a higher sustainability rating and develop more sustainable farming methods, therefore protecting the environment for future farmers.

A recent survey by Trace One found that while 91% of consumers think it is important to know where their food comes from, only 12% wholeheartedly trust the safety of the food they consume.

This has created a need for farmers to improve their traceability standards through better product traceability programs. The reasons to invest in traceability are many but we have broken them down into three main categories.

Create and Maintain Consumer Trust
Consumer movements like ‘Eat Local’ illustrate the demand for more information about where and how their food was grown. This puts the onus on farmers to create clear records on the entire history of the products they send to market and is often referred to as “farm to fork traceability”. Product labelling becomes more complicated as more information is required. A traceability program can help ease this burden by creating custom labels for each distributor that include lot numbers to trace the produce all the way back to the field.

A traceability program run through farm management software can also promote consumer trust by compiling all your data into organized reports. Reports make receiving certifications consumers look for easier, as auditors are able to see all your production history in one place.

Decrease Waste/Loss
One of the most compelling reasons to use a product traceability program

is to decrease loss through better inventory management. Being able to trace products through all stages of production mean that problem areas can be better dealt with. You can trace specific products by lot numbers back to contamination points in the event of a recall instead of pulling all your products.

Properly tracking products from the field to shipment also helps eliminate errors in sorting so products can be packaged and labelled correctly every time. Accurately tracking packaging material inventory also means you can reorder exactly what you need and can better assess what kinds of packaging work best for storage and sales.

Traceability can also help make labour on your farm more efficient. Being able to link employees and work crews to production practices enables you to see where there are problem areas and deal with them as they arise.

Improve Productivity and Profits
In addition to being able to track employees to find problem areas of production, an improved traceability program can help increase profits by allowing for more accurate pay calculation including using piecerate pay methods. Piecerate calculations can save your farm money by improving productivity incentives.

Traceability over time can also help improve yields. Traceability and an accurate farm record keeping system enables farmers to make data driven decisions and develop the best production practices.

Traceability is going to become increasingly important in the agricultural industry. It is important that farmers and farm managers create and maintain accurate traceability programs to stay competitive in today’s markets.

1. Quick Response to Food Recall Incidents
When a risk or anomaly is identified in a food product, you need to trace its source and prevent it from being sold to the consumer. With the help of traceability in agriculture, contaminated or damaged products are easily located based on a serial or batch number. Moreover, an effective traceability system can trace back through the entire food supply chain and identify the source of the problem.

During emergency food recalls, traceability in agriculture can help you provide a clear view of the supply chain, making planning a food recall situation easier. In addition, it simplifies the complete process by quickly identifying the batch of the affected products. This helps in building consumer trust by ensuring that only good-quality and safe products are available in the stores. With a traceability system, you can track down the root cause of the problem and prevent the damage from happening again.

2. Food Safety and Compliance With Quality Standards
One of the essential benefits of traceability in agriculture is ensuring safety and quality compliance. However, food safety depends on two factors – well-defined production activities for good quality yields as well as a proper transportation system to ensure perishable agriproducts reach the desired warehouses/ stores in time. If this is not carried out carefully, it can cause the deterioration of the quality of agriproducts and can even lead to severe food borne illnesses.

Traceability in agriculture can act as a good solution to this predicament. The visibility that traceability systems provide to the stakeholders helps them locate and prevent any unhygienic practices. It also assists in uncovering inefficiencies in any of the processes across the supply chain, thereby enabling agribusinesses to take accurate preventive actions. In this manner, traceability in agriculture helps ensure that the agriproducts meet the standard quality requirements.

3. Streamlined Supply Chain Operations
Another evident advantage of introducing traceability in agriculture and digitalising supply chains is enhancing the productivity of supply chain operations. Irrespective of the type and industry, every business wants to keep optimising its operations to improve the end results. Traceability in agriculture can be instrumental in enabling agro-producers to achieve this.

Digitally tracking and analysing agriculture supply chain activities can be advantageous in understanding specific patterns so as to refine the processes for better outcomes. This way, traceability systems offer transparency and greater control over the supply chain operations to the stakeholders. This, in turn, helps them address various points for improvements pertaining to food wastage, quality and also identifies opportunities to make the processes more cost-effective.

4. Higher Customer Trust and Confidence
Consumers today are highly conscious and concerned about the food products they consume. Firstly, they want to make sure that the agriproducts they wish to buy meet the desired quality and safety norms. Moreover, they are also interested in getting insights into the environmental impact caused during the cultivation and transportation of those agriproducts.

Traceability in agriculture can play a significant role in providing customers with these crucial details. With the help of a QR code, customers today are able to trace the entire journey of an agriproduct, right from seed to a finished product available in stores. Details about the farm, farmer, quality of product and many more details can be easily accessed through this QR code. This helps in strengthening the consumer’s trust in your agriproduct.

5. Much Better Market Prices for Agriproducts
When it comes to getting the right market price, producers generally find it challenging to convince the consumers that their agriproducts are of the highest quality standards. Traceability in agriculture helps producers validate the accuracy and quality in the production of their agriproducts. It enables them to prove to the customers that they have met all the necessary quality and safety standards provided by the certifying bodies.

Consumers today are even willing to pay extra for the food products they consume as long as they get detailed information about the journey of that product. This involves the end-to-end processes, right from being a seed to production, harvest, post-production and shipping. This way, traceability in agriculture can empower producers to negotiate and get higher market prices for the superior quality of agriproducts they provide.

As consumers worldwide are becoming more knowledgeable about food safety and quality issues, producers, agribusinesses, and stakeholders along the supply chain must work towards meeting consumer demands. This is where a seed-to-shelf traceability system plays a significant role in maintaining quality and safety throughout the digitally managed supply chain.
