Why traceability matters now

Recalls cost growers, packers and retailers far more than the affected product: the 2008 Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak was wrongly linked to tomatoes and cost that industry over US$100 million before it was traced to peppers. Fast, precise traces limit both the public health impact and the financial damage.

Regulation is catching up. The FDA Food Traceability Rule (FSMA 204) requires key data elements for critical tracking events – harvesting, cooling, initial packing, first land-based receiving, shipping, receiving and transformation – for foods on the Food Traceability List, with records provided within 24 hours of a request. The compliance date is 20 July 2028. Canada's SFCR, the EU's General Food Law and Australian export programs set similar one-step-back, one-step-forward rules, and the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI) standardises case labels across North America.

What is fresh produce traceability?

The ability to follow produce and its inputs one step back and one step forward at every stage – farm, packhouse, distribution, retail – and to retrieve those records quickly in a recall.

What does FSMA 204 require?

For foods on the FDA Food Traceability List, businesses that grow, receive, transform, ship or receive them must keep key data elements for each critical tracking event and provide them to FDA within 24 hours, as an electronic sortable spreadsheet when requested. The compliance date is 20 July 2028.

What is a traceability lot code?

A code assigned when food is initially packed, received by the first land-based receiver, or transformed. It must stay with the product and be recorded at every later shipping and receiving event.
