Avocado packaging for long distance transport
Solidus Solutions has been present for many years in the avocado market, supplying avocado packaging for long distance imports by sea from countries such as Chile or Mexico whilst also in more local distribution channels in Spain and other European countries. Solid board packaging stays resistant to humidity, especially for long transport times in refrigerated containers. The cardboard avocado packaging maintains structure and it protects the precious product it carries. It also does not absorb humidity, so it does not dehydrate the fruit. In addition solid board is thinner than most packaging materials and so occupies less space in the container, with the result of more boxes per container. Our clients export fruit, not cardboard after all!

EFFICIENT AVOCADO PACKAGING FOR EXPORT
After the United States, the Netherlands is the largest importer of avocados. The majority of avocados - four out of five - are destined for export. Higher demands are placed on the packaging of the fruit due to the conditions in which avocados are transported. As a packaging supplier, we produce an avocado packaging made of solid board that meets these requirements.
Avocados exported from the Netherlands are stored for weeks in a cold, damp container with a relatively lower temperature of around 4 to 5 degrees Celsius, which is significantly lower compared to many other fruit and vegetable products. Poorly constructed packaging runs the risk of collapsing under these conditions. This is a serious problem in many avocado exporting countries. It is therefore essential to distribute avocados in moisture-resistant packaging with a solid construction.
AVOCADO PACKAGING OF SOLID BOARD
Avocado packaging is produced from solid board, just like all other packaging by Smart Packaging Solutions. Solid board has an extremely high density, which makes it very strong and compact and therefore suitable for the production of well-constructed packaging, which can be stacked higher and with greater stability. The high density of the material also ensures that the packaging is moisture-resistant, which makes it suitable for transport at low storage temperatures. Solid board packaging therefore meets all the essential requirements for avocados.
ATTRACTIVE PRINTING
These days, avocado packaging does not only serve a protective function, but also a marketing function. Customized packaging plays an increasingly important role. Solid board is distinguished by its considerable flatness, which makes it very easy to print on. This is another reason why this form of packaging material is preferable to corrugated board, for example, which is a lot harder and more expensive to print on.

100% recyclable packaging for avocados: The combination of cardboard tray and paper band protects the delicate fruit and automates the packaging process.
The avocado is the world's fastest growing fruit species. In 2018, around 650,000 tons of the high-fat fruit were consumed in Europe. In Germany, imports increased five times between 2008 and 2018: from 19'000 to 94'000 tons. The demands on the automation level of the packaging process are correspondingly high, on the one hand, and the savings potential for packaging material, on the other.
The combination packaging consisting of a tray made of cardboard, sugar cane (bagasse) or another renewable raw material and a paper band up to 100 mm wide offers many advantages:
The entire packaging is 100% recyclable. The percentage of already recycled material is also high, depending on the choice of packaging material.
The packaging does not use plastic.
The percentage of foreign material is below the 5% set by many EU countries.
The packaging process can be partially or fully automated, if required.
The previously high-quality and, if desired, double-sided printed paper band takes over the branding of the product.
Flexible information such as picking or expiration date, producer or codes printed on the band during banding replace labels.
The combination of tray and band offers optimum protection for the sensitive fruit. From the producer to the consumer.
The packaging is extremely customer-friendly. It can easily be opened by hand, simply separated and just as easily disposed of correctly. So that the materials used can be recycled again.
The solution is flexible and works not only for avocados and two packs. Tomatoes, apples, peaches and other fruit and vegetables could be packed in units of any size.
