According to a Cornell report, about 59 percent of restaurants fail within the first three years, which is a cumulative statistic that includes chain restaurants and independently owned restaurants. On average, restaurants with 5 or fewer employees last 3.75 years while other startups of the same size last 4 years.
The good news is the food service industry is growing. From 2015 to 2016, Data USA estimates the restaurant employment rate grew by nearly 2 percent and is expected to grow by 0.6 percent over the next 10 years. Worldwide, the food and beverage industry is growing at a rate of 5 percent, according to Plant & Food Research.
That means there are opportunities for restaurants and the industries that supply them to jump ahead of the competition through advanced inventory management.
